Most Commonly Asked Hyperpigmentation Questions

What causes hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation happens when melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, is produced in excess. This overproduction can be triggered by several factors including sun exposure, hormonal changes such as pregnancy or birth control pills, skin injuries like acne scars, or inflammation. These causes lead to patches or spots that are darker than your surrounding skin.

How do you treat hyperpigmentation?
Treatment options range in the form of prescriptions, facial peels, and/or laser treatments to effectively address hyperpigmentation.

Once we design your hyperpigmentation treatment plan, we will talk with you about preventive measures you can take. For example, covering your skin while you’re outside, avoiding indoor tanning, and applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily are all helpful for minimizing future pigmentation issues. Individual results may vary.

Is hyperpigmentation treatment painful and how many sessions will I need?
Most clients find these treatments comfortable, usually describing a warm or tingling sensation during sessions. Discomfort is minimal and well-tolerated. To achieve the best results, most people require a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced a few weeks to a month apart, depending on the peel that your provider chooses for your treatment plan.  Your provider will tailor your treatment plan to your skin’s response and goals.
